How Much Does a Personal Trainer Cost in Chicago?

In Chicago, a one-on-one personal training session usually costs $70 to $150, with most independent trainers landing around $85 to $120. Rates climb for specialized coaches and drop when you buy sessions in packages. Where you train matters too, since a trainer working out of a high-overhead franchise often charges more to cover it.

That range is the short answer. What follows is what actually moves the number, so you can tell a fair rate from an inflated one.

What drives the price of a personal trainer

  • Experience and specialization. A general trainer costs less than a coach who specializes in powerlifting, post-injury work, or competition prep.
  • Session length. Most rates quote a 60-minute session. Thirty-minute sessions cost less but are not half price.
  • Packages vs. single sessions. Buying 10 or 20 sessions usually lowers the per-session rate. One-off sessions sit at the top of the range.
  • The gym behind the trainer. A trainer at a large club may fold the club membership and facility costs into your rate. Independent trainers in a smaller space often keep overhead lower.

Do you have to pay for a gym membership too?

Often, yes. At many gyms you pay the trainer and a membership to the facility, even if you only come in for sessions. That second fee is easy to miss when you compare rates.

It does not have to work that way. At The Club 312, our trainers are independent contractors who pay the gym a flat $30 per session for the space. Because that keeps their overhead low and predictable, you book the coach directly and skip the membership you would not use. If you also want to train solo, membership is a separate $139 a month and capped at 35 people.

How to get the most for what you pay

The cheapest session is the one that actually moves you forward. A coach who watches every rep in an uncrowded room is worth more than a discounted hour spent waiting for equipment. When you compare trainers, ask what the room is like at the time you would train, not just the hourly rate.
